If escaping the city this summer isn’t on your itinerary, we’ve heard of 5 plans in Madrid that should be! Although there’s no shimmery coastline in the dry, sunny capital, there are a few other ways for beating the heat in the months ahead. Here are our recommendations for your plans in Madrid this summer.
5 Plans in Madrid This Summer:
Open-air cinema: Fescinal 2016
A session of open-air cinema is a must in Madrid. While there are several to choose from, Fescinal will be showing over 200 movies from the 18th of July to the 10th of September on two screens! A big screen will be showing films dubbed in Spanish and a smaller screen showing films in their original versions.
Head to the beach, without leaving Madrid
The Pantano de San Juan has over 14km of sandy shores and blue waters (no salt though; sorry). It is the only dam in Madrid where people are allowed to swim, and is a classic destination for families and couples who are sticking around all summer. If you’re planning on going during the weekend, head there early, because it gets pretty packed during July and August!
A bit like bar-hopping but outdoors! Have a few tinto de veranos and beers at some of the best terraces Madrid has to offer. Our favourites include: Doña Tecla, The Hat, La Tita Rivera, Saporem and Gau Café (an oasis in the crowded Lavapies).
Free (or almost) culture
Madrid is full of free stuff to do! Open-air circus, a folk concert in an old bar, a naval battle recreation in a city neighbourhood… There are tons of options! Check out the itinerary of Veranos de la Villa for free (and almost free) events, concerts and exhibits all across the city, or head to Timeout’s handy summer calendar for a full list of everything that Madrid has to offer.
Dcode Music Festival
Dcode is the annual music festival that brings the summer season to a close in Madrid, every September. This year the lineup includes the likes of Mark Ronson, Jungle, 2manydjs, M. Ward, Eagles of Death Metal and many more!
